August Runner of the Month

August Runner of the Month: Petriece Culberson

When and why did you start running? I began running as a hobby in 2008. Prior to that I ran almost every day for over 20 years while in the Army.

How long have you been a runner? Since I was a teenager.

First race? Hmmmm... Let's just say it was a long, long time ago! 😄

Most recent race? I just completed Badass Texas in Waco on Aug 6th.

Favorite piece of gear? My iPod Nano & Jaybird earbuds. We are connected for life! Lol!

What shoes do you run in? Hoka One One Clifton 3s. The only shoes that keep my feet from screaming after a long run. Best running memory? Oh, I have sooo many great memories... I'd have to say that watching my son carry Old Glory across the finish line & him finishing first in his age group at a 5k felt pretty amazing!

Bucket list race? The Great Wall marathon

Favorite race so far? San Francisco marathon Do you have a favorite distance? I am a loyal fan of the half marathon distance. The 50k is quickly making its way up the list! I love the challenge & the sense of accomplishment when I cross the finish line.

What is something that most people do not know about you? That I am a 20 year, retired Army, combat veteran. HOOAH!

Favorite tune to rock out to while running? Oh my goodness! This is a hard one. I'd have to say anything up tempo & funky... Fergie, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars... My list is long!

Best part about running? For me, running is my therapy. I sing, I pray, I cry, I laugh at myself & when I'm done I feel lighter & happier with a little extra pep in my step! Running is a constant reminder that I am so much stronger than I give myself credit for.

Who inspires you? My son is my greatest inspiration. He is an amazing athlete with no quit in him. He keeps me young! I am also inspired by my many frunners who are battling or have beat cancer, my dear friend with Parkinson's Disease & my brothers/sisters in arms whom have lost limbs while serving and continue to lace up everyday despite their illnesses or disabilities.

What has been your biggest challenge so far? I have several permanent injuries that just won't let me be great some days. It totally sucks but I don't let it get me down. "Challenges are what makes life interesting. Over coming them is what makes life meaningful". J. Marine

Any words of advice? Running is not about being better than anyone else. It's about being better than you used to be. Author unknown.
