May Runner of the Month | Maria-Paula Carrillo
When and why did you start running? I didn’t start running until after I had both my girls. It happened almost by “accident”. In the summer of 2011, I went with a friend of a friend to join a Meet-up running group that had just formed. The group ended up being really cool, supportive, and motivating. We became good friends and a few of us still run together.
First race? White Rock Half Marathon 2011 (the last year before it became Dallas Marathon)
Most recent race? The Allen Eagle Run with my girls.
Favorite piece of gear? I am not a gear junkie, but do love my SPI belt.
What shoes do you run in? Mizuno Wave Catalyst or Wave Rider, Asics DTS or Gel DS
Favorite way to cross train? Camp Gladiator all the way. Started over 4 years ago and can’t stop! It’s the perfect complement to my running.
Best running memory? Ragnar Luckenbach with 9 other fun MRTT frunners! Memories for days…
Bucket list race? Barkley Marathons – dream big or go home!
Favorite race so far? I would have to say The Houston Marathon. The support during this race was insane! Anyone want to sign-up for the half next year?
Do you have a favorite distance? Half marathon for sure. The perfect middle ground.
What is something that most people do not know about you? I have a twin brother, Jose Luis.
Favorite tune to rock out to while running? I stopped listening to music while I run a few years back but Pitbull used to fuel my inner Latina power.
Best part about running? All the feelings - before, after, during! My me time and of course my frunners!
Who inspires you? The running community! The early am runners, the late night runners, the interval runners, the speedy runners, the hot-day runners. But the reason I continue to do this is because of who I want to inspire…my girls!
What has been your biggest challenge so far? Returning to running after injury – trying to stay focused and consistent and not looking back.
Any words of advice? Focus on what you can do right now. Set-up small goals and have fun achieving them and discovering your why!
