October Runner of the Month | Angela Sands
When did you start running? I started ‘really’ running in 2005 after I had my first son as a way to lose weight and get back in shape.
First race? My first race was way back when they had Muddy Buddy. It was a leap frog style race with a partner where one ran while one bikes and they switched off at obstacles.
Most recent race? Ironically, my most recent race was called Muddy Dash (even though it was more of a walk through). So my last REAL race was my very 1st marathon in Cali, Orange County Marathon.
Favorite piece of gear? I guess I’d saw my watch (Apple series 3). I like to keep track and push myself when I can.
What shoes do you run in? Altra Escalante
Favorite way to cross train? I do a variety of Beachbody workouts, everything from MMA style to weights to HIIT.
Best running memory? Funniest: Getting caught a mile or so away from our car when a big storm blew in with heavy rain, wind, and ugly lightning. Amazing: Crossing the finish line of my 1st marathon and crying as soon as I called my husband and kids. The emotions we insane (and I am normally NOT a crier).
Bucket list race? I don’t really have a bucket list race. I love some good swag, beautiful scenery while pushing my limits.
Favorite race so far? Spartan Race is probably my favorite so far.
Do you have a favorite distance? 10k is perfect
What is something that most people do not know about you? I’m a pretty open book. Aren’t most runners? I mean who else can you freely talking about your pooping schedule with? 😂
Favorite tune to rock out to while running? I’m one of those crazy people who doesn’t listen to music while running.
Best part about running? When it’s over and you did it!
Who inspires you? All runners! The winners of races because I know all of the hard work and the runners who are last because they keep going and refuse to quit. Runners are all amazing!
What has been your biggest challenge so far? Getting out of my own head when it gets hard.....and stretching enough.
Any words of advice? Running is just as much mentally challenging (if not more) than physically. “When your mind is telling you that you're done, that you're exhausted, that you cannot possibly go any further, you're only actually 40% done.” -David Goggins
