August Runner of the Month | Cristin Dicken
When and why did you start running?
I started running longer distances at the end of college when my mom decided she was suddenly going to become a runner. I had to try to keep up with her (but she kicked my butt.)
First race? My first half marathon with the Indy Mini 2005.
Most recent race? Snuck in the Little Rock 5K and Marathon on March 1 before the world shut down.
Favorite piece of gear? Apple watch and Goodrs
What shoes do you run in? Dedicated to Hoka
Favorite way to cross-train?
Most of my cross training is CG now. I love cycling when I can find the time.
Best running memory? Chicago Marathon 2019. I trained so hard for that race but came down with pneumonia the week before. My goal was to break 5 hours and to beat my mom's time from 2003 (we are competitive.) I went in without expectations because I was sick. I somehow finished the race 10 minutes under my goal time. My mom was crying at the finish line because she was so proud.
Bucket List Race?
I don't have a specific race in mind, but it will be on a gorgeous trail.
What is your favorite race so far?
Rockledge Rumble 50K. It took me to a new level of pain, but crossing the finish line was the best feeling.
Do you have a favorite distance?
The distance I run the most is the half marathon
What is something that most people do not know about you? I'm obsessed with garage sale and thrift store shopping. Favorite tune to rock out to while running? 2 songs on my playlist that give me that extra little push are Sally Walker by Iggy Azalea and My Chick Bad by Ludacris
Best part about running?
All the friendships I've made through the years. They are bonds that will never be broken.
Who inspires you? My mom is the most amazingly strong woman and runner I know. She went through a quadruple bypass and was back running an 8 mile race 3 months later. She's my biggest fan and biggest competition.
What has been your biggest challenge so far?
Keeping the motivation year after year. I definitely have slumps where I feel like I just need a break. For me they are necessary for improvement.
Any words of advice?
Don't compare yourself to other runners. We all share something special through running.
