January Runner of the Month | Aimee Wisdom
When and why did you start running?
I think I started consistently running about 8 years ago. I originally started because I met people in my neighborhood who ran and being relatively new to Allen, I wanted to meet people. I enjoyed running when I was younger, so I was interested in picking it back up.
First race? My first race was a 5k in Irving, TX about 10 years ago.
Most recent race? My most recent race was the McKinney Half Marathon in December 2020. I was so excited to do an in-person race after most races were canceled or done virtually last year.
Favorite piece of gear? My must-have is one of my cute headbands, made by our very own Alicia Loran. It's literally the only headband that stays on my head during a run. Cute AND functional!
What shoes do you run in? Brooks Ghost
Favorite way to cross-train?
Camp Gladiator! I've been a CG camper for almost 5 years. I love it because it incorporates a full-body workout, the workouts are never repeated, and I have met some incredible friends who hold me accountable.
Best running memory? I have so many great running memories, but my best so far is my first half marathon. It was the Fairview Half. Most of my running group ran it as well and of course, they were extremely supportive. When I came to the final tenth of a mile, I saw my family and some incredible friends holding signs with my name on them. I can't put into words how awesome that felt.
Bucket List Race?
Gosh! I have so many. Honestly, I have yet to do a full marathon, so my bucket list race isn't one specific race, but just to complete a full at some point. Now, if I could do my first full marathon in NYC, that would be pretty freaking awesome!
What is your favorite race so far?
My favorite race so far was the Nashville Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon. It was hilly but the crowd support was impressive and the energy was great!
Do you have a favorite distance?
I think my favorite distance is 15k. I always run the Hot Chocolate because of the 15k option (well, and maybe the cool swag).
What is something that most people do not know about you? Most people probably don't know that teaching is my second career. I went back to school to finish my degree in Education. I graduated from college when I was 42 and began my teaching career shortly afterward. This is only my third year as a teacher. Although I wish that I had started earlier in life, I'm so proud that I followed my dream. I am where I am meant to be.
I've also been told that people are surprised at how outgoing I am. I guess I seem quiet at first. Indeed, I am not.
Favorite tune to rock out to while running? My running playlist is all over the place. You'll find everything from Taylor Swift to Ed Sheeran to Metallica. By the end of a long run, "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson will always get me through.
Best part about running? Hands down, the best part of running is the camaraderie and support I"ve found in the women I get the pleasure to run alongside regularly. They have been my rock. Shout out to Tracy T., Christy T., Kim M., Kim L., Kelly B., Lindsay S., Jessica L., Alicia L., and others who I am sure I forgot to name. They were my therapists for the last several months and continue to serve in that role as needed.
Who inspires you? Even after her death, my grandmother still inspires me. She lived to be 94 and was extremely healthy and active until the end. She was mentally and physically strong. She exhibited an active lifestyle, which I hope to pass on to my kids and grandkids (someday).
What has been your biggest challenge so far?
My biggest challenge is not being able to afford all of the races I want to do! If you ladies know of any sugar daddies out there who want to fund my race entries, hit me up! I'm kidding! Sort of.
Any words of advice? My advice is to find your people. Find that group of women who you can be there for, and who will be there for you. There's truly nothing like knowing that these girls have my back, not only out there on that pavement, but in life.
